People facing severe health related crises turn to the Department of Advanced Critical Care at KIMS Hospitals, Mahadevapura, during their most dire moments. Our Intensive care doctors, nurses and support team remain ready around the clock to deliver immediate help and treatment to patients needing the highest level of care.
Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU)
Doctors and nurses in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at KIMS Hospitals work as part of a respected team known for both heart care and research. They provide top-notch cardiovascular treatments using advanced tools to care for hospitalised heart patients. These services include 3D echocardiography and devices that support heart function.
A certified cardiologist doctor leads the team, which consists of skilled specialists and nurses trained to handle heart-related health issues. The team focuses on giving patients the best treatment and results while also supporting their families and loved ones.
The CICU includes private rooms, each having its own bathroom, along with a family section where sofa beds let relatives stay overnight if they want. Families also get a comfortable waiting area that has a consulting room to hold private talks with the care team. There is also a modern workspace available, which offers access to a conference room. The design of the CICU helps the team offer expert care with compassion in an environment that promotes recovery. Patients get top-quality critical care, which leads to better results and improves their chances of regaining their physical abilities after their time in the CICU and hospital. The team collaborates with rehab therapists, social workers, and palliative care experts to provide patients and families the support they need to get back to everyday life, whether at home or at work.
Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (NSICU)
The Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit is designed to focus on patient care. Board-certified neuro-intensivists, neurocritical care nurses, advanced care providers, and trainees make up the core team along with physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers, nutritionists, and case managers. The neurocritical care staff stays on duty around the clock. They collaborate with top neurosurgeons, interventional neuroradiologists, stroke specialists, and epileptologists to handle all types of urgent neurosurgical or neurological needs.
We focus on providing advanced and caring treatment to patients dealing with conditions such as subarachnoid haemorrhage, acute ischemic stroke, intracerebral haemorrhage, subdural hematomas, comas, brain and spinal tumours, long-lasting or refractory seizures, neuro-infections, spinal cord injuries, and other related issues. The team uses advanced neuromonitoring methods, point-of-care ultrasound, EEG, and neuroimaging to offer top-level neurocritical care. As part of our research extension, we do take part in multicenter clinical trials, investigator-led research, and partner with other institutions to improve care for people with serious neurological injuries.
Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU)
The Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit, or CTICU, cares for patients healing from heart or chest surgeries.
A team of intensivists and cardiac surgeons provides expert care to patients with serious heart, lung, or chest conditions. The specialists have expertise in cardiac anesthesiology, cardiothoracic surgery, and critical care medicine. They deliver medical support that can save lives.
The treatment team includes not just doctors, but also nurses, dieticians, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, and social workers. They all work together to help patients recover.
Total Artificial Hearts (TAHs)
The CTICU holds certification to provide heart / lung transplants and left/ right ventricular assist devices (LVADs/ RVADs). Only a small number of hospitals nationwide make total artificial hearts (TAHs) available. These devices provide artificial heart support to help patients recover enough strength to go home while living with a TAH.
Heart Failure Consult Services
Cardiologists lead the heart failure team, which acts as a consult service accessible to every patient. Doctors on this team collaborate with CTICU intensivists to care for very sick patients. These include those with artificial hearts, left ventricular assist devices, or those waiting for or healing from heart transplants. The team also stays involved in patient care even after discharge.
Nursing Care
The skilled nursing team in the unit delivers expert care tailored to the specific needs of patients. KIMS Hospitals, Mahadevapura, aims to lead in nursing care and offers programs to educate nurses and certify them in advanced cardiac management. Experienced nursing educators guide these programs. Over half of the nurses in the CTICU hold advanced cardiac care certifications.
Our nurses stand out with their expertise in tools such as inhaled nitric oxide, LVADs, and TAHs. Our CTICU nurses focus on helping patients heal after open-heart or complicated chest surgeries. They work with advanced heart and blood flow monitoring tools and care for patients using cutting-edge equipment like ECMO ventricular assist devices and artificial hearts.
Surgical Intensive Care Unit
Patients recovering from surgeries like vascular, orthopaedic, urologic, gynaecology-obstetrics, thoracic, transplants, or general operations often stay for observation in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This unit operates as a closed ICU and an intensivist—a specialist in critical care—leads the round the clock team. All our doctors have nationally recognised certification in Critical care. Critical care fellows, surgical and anaesthesia residents, and advanced care providers back them up.
